Chevy S10 Blazer and Extreme (Xtreme)
The Chevy Blazer was introduced by General Motors during the year 1983. It came at a time when the Chevy S10 pickups had become very popular. The term SUV (Sport utility vehicle) was, however, far from being a household term. In retrospect, the Chevy S10 Blazer was quite an industry pioneer. People started taking some serious notice of the new kid on the block and it's unique "extreme" abilities. The Blazer truly appealed to the outdoorsy folks who didn't want to drive around one of the other larger SUV's of that time period. Through out the years the Blazer has remained rather true to its roots though.
Jumping far forward, you have models such as the Blazer Xtreme of 2001 pictured above. As you can see, in the interim of 20 or so years a lot changed with the Blazers styling and design. They went from a more rugged vehicle to a stylish street cruiser that appeals to a somewhat different group of people. Unfortunate for those original fans who enjoyed the ability of the Blazer off-road. As a sidenote, the Blazer has a close twin, the GMC Jimmy. It also went through similar transformations but didn't quite make it all the way to the level of the Xtreme Blazer model.
Re-birth of the Blazer? Meet the TrailBlazer
If you can really consider the TrailBlazer a Blazer at all. Every single thing on the vehicle from the wheels up was re-designed and new. As more people turned to SUV's over traditional vehicles for the additional space and safety GM saw huge opportunity. The off-road crowd typically goes for a pickup truck these days and mid-size SUV's such as the TrailBlazer have become the norm for cruising around town.
You would be surprised at the luxuries included in a Chevy Trailblazer such as the 2005 model above. Heated and power seats, sunroof, full navigation systems, traction and stability control, and the list goes on. These Chevy TrailBlazers are really a whole new animal when compared to the seamingly basic (yet rugged and fun) Blazer of the past. It seems like the death of an SUV icon but there are always going to be vehicles out there that will fit just about everyones needs. They just won't necessarily always come from the same manufacturer.
