Chevy S10 ZR2
General Motors at some point decided that there was demand for a
Chevy S10 truck that could handle more rugged and off-road terrain. From that decision came the Chevy S10 ZR2, one of the most rugged mid-sized trucks available in the mid to late 90's. The ZR2 package proved to be quite popular and drove GM to expand it from the S10 to its twin the GMC Sonoma and later even to the
Chevy S10 Blazer and Tracker.
Your typical S10 ZR2 like the 2000 model shown above came directly from the factory
with the following features just to name a few.
- Increased ground clearance of an extra 3 inches.
- Factory BF Goodrich All Terrain tires.
- Fender Flares (cosmetic.)
- Skid Plates
- Full Size Spare Tire
- Front and read disc brakes in most recent models.
Under the Hood of the Chevy S10 ZR2
To keep things simple, GM used the same tried and tested Vortec 4.3L 6 cylinder motor on all ZR2 S10 and Blazer models. For the overall size of the vehicles, the motor definitely had enough power. If you're in the market for a ZR2, keep in mind that they did offer 2 wheel drive model's as well (although most are in fact 4x4.)
As far as after market parts, most suppliers don't have much to offer. Obviously, a lot of the components for the standard Chevy S10's will fit the ZR2 (especially common accessories such as grill bars, step bars, lights, and so on.) So no worries, you can still mod out your ZR2. To be honest though, ZR2 S10's are almost quite rare. You don't see many of them on the roads and for sale sites. I'm not sure on numbers but I'm sure GM didn't produce a ton of these vehicles.
